2018 is a year of record-breaking growth and exciting additions for Asheville VeganFest!

Join us for two evenings of amazing music and stand up comedy during Asheville VeganFest weekend! Featuring Lee Camp, comedian and independent news reporter, performing both Friday, June 8 and Saturday, June 9, and Antibalas, an American, Brooklyn-based afrobeat band, performing on Saturday, June 9!

The shows will feature opening performances by Grey, one of the hottest emerging artists at the intersection between activism & hip hop (best known for his mega viral hit Vegan Thanksgiving), and local vegan musical all-stars Austn Haynes & Debrissa McKinney.

About Antibalas:

The massive musical family known as Antibalas was born in 1998 in Brooklyn New York in the same squalid former Brooklyn cheesecake factory that incubated the Dap Kings and TV on the Radio, making their at a poetry night at St. Nick’s Pub in Harlem. Since their humble beginnings, the twelve+ piece ensemble has performed nearly 2000 shows in 35 countries around the world.

Apart from its reputation among the world’s top afrobeat groups, Antibalas and its members are rooted itself at the crossroads of contemporary New York music as connectors and collaborators through the city’s disparate music scenes from Afro-Cuban, avant classical, soul, rock, rap, reggae, and pop music. In the past few years, the group has performed and/or recorded with artists including Jovanotti, Mark Ronson, Santigold, Angelique Kidjo, My Morning Jacket, Zap Mama, The Roots, Medeski, Martin and Wood, David Byrne and St. Vincent. Antibalas has also served as the house band at Carnegie Hall performing the music of Paul Simon (2014), David Byrne and Talking Heads (2015) and Aretha Franklin (2017) backing over 40 star vocalists.

About Lee Camp:

Lee is the head writer and host of the national TV show Redacted Tonight with Lee Camp on RT America. He’s a former contributor to The Onion, former staff humor writer for the Huffington Post, and his web series
“Moment of Clarity” has been viewed by millions. He’s toured the country and the world with his fierce brand of standup comedy, and George Carlin’s daughter Kelly said he’s one of the few comics keeping her father’s torch lit. Bill Hicks’s brother Steve said Lee is one of only a handful with Bill’s “message and passion.”

About Grey:

Grey is one of the hottest emerging artists at the intersection between activism, urban style & hip hop. A growing Atlanta institution in his own right, Grey became one of the most talked about acts of 2016 after his Vegan Thanksgiving freestyle & music video took the internet by storm. His superb, cerebral and soulful flow ensured that his message went global, earning him 75k new followers and nods from Russell Simmons, DL Hughley, Ellie Goulding, Unilad, Worldstar, and Baller Alert. Notching a total of 30+ million views, he was catapulted from local stardom to the global stage. Even PETA and Whole Foods supported his release, proving the cross-marketability of Grey and his message.

His music and clothing line, Plant Based Drippin, is creating a new energy in the vegan community. A lyricist, activist, and social entrepreneur, Grey is nothing short of refreshing. With a clear, understandable, and sophisticated flow, Grey is an artist to watch in 2018. He, like vegan cooking, just might surprise you.

About Austn Haynes and Debrissa McKinney:

Debrissa McKinney is a venerated professional musician based out of Asheville NC. She is a vital member of the acclaimed brass band Empire Strikes Brass, but perhaps her most notable work yet has been recording and touring with the Grammy award winning children’s hip hop band Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. As a vocalist she is well known for her dynamic singing abilities and styles. She has captivated many souls on stage performing with musical legends such as George Clinton, Karl Denson and Gov’t Mule. As a highly driven musician she constantly keeps fans wondering what can’t she do.

Austn Haynes is a free-thinking, free-moving, independent hip hop vocalist. His lyrics are profoundly thoughtful and paint pictures of human strength, struggle and beauty. With parents who owned small record businesses, he grew up surrounded by music of all types. There are links to all these genres in his vibrant style of hip hop; along with musical inspirations from The Allman Brothers Band and Gov’t Mule, both bands of which his uncle, guitarist Warren Haynes is a long-time member. As a musician Austn has shared the stage with his uncle along with many other iconic figures ranging from members of The Wu-Tang Clan, Digable Planets, Steep Canyon Rangers and Ice Cube.

With the fusion of their unique talents, Debrissa & Austn have created a colorful musical experience that pushes genre boundaries, and highlights awareness on different levels. This project was born out of the love they have for music, and a collective love for the Earth and all of its inhabitants. Their music takes listeners to new worlds and almost effortlessly leaves them with a bright sense of self empowerment.
